Maritime radio services

Openserve monitors the global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS) through an extensive recently upgraded (2019) terrestrial based radio network and satellite-based network.

Our network comprises of 34 remote radio stations, spanning the South African coastline from Alexander Bay on the West Coast to Kosi Bay on the East Coast. All the remote sites are connected to Milnerton radio station through a VPN on Openserve’s national network.

The radio network is used to communicate to mariners, relaying distress calls, medical information and weather reports.

Safety of life at sea

The Maritime radio division has been contracted by the National DoT, to fulfil the safety of life at sea (SOLAS) responsibilities South Africa has towards all the international mariners, traversing one of the most important sea routes linking Europe with the Far East.
